Cardboard Box Car Derby Rules
— Rules last updated for the 2024-25 season.
Table Of Contents
Car Design and Decoration
- Each scout and parent should fabricate a car from a cardboard box big enough for him (the driver) to stand in and run
around with. - The car can be decorated and shaped in any manner, and cardboard or other lightweight accessories may
be added if desired. - Crayons, markers, spray paint, or even old house paint may be used.
- Use of scrap cardboard and decoration supplies is encouraged.
- Keep the car well balanced so it does not tip forward or drag back, and keep it as light as possible.
- Remember there is no need to spend a lot of money on the car, since this is just meant to be a fun race and the “car” will likely be “totaled” by the end of the day, or at least suffer a fender bender!
- Copier paper boxes are a reasonable size, especially for younger scouts.
- The smaller the car, the easier a child can maneuver through the course. However, a larger car affords more protection from bumping into other cars and discouraging other cars from passing. Help your scout make the best choice for him/her!
Race Rules
- The scouts will race in heats with other scouts. Each racer may be assigned a number at check-in.
- The race will involve one lap through the course to the required pit stop, followed by another lap to the finish line.
- Each racer must successfully negotiate every obstacle.
- All racers are REQUIRED to wear a bike helmet or hat, goggles or sunglasses, sneakers with laces (no Velcro), and socks that extend above the ankle. Each racer must also carry a comb with him.
- The pit crew consists of ONE adult (parent or guardian).
- The pit stop will require the following operations (no particular order, can be simultaneous)
- Clean Windshield (performed by pit crew only): take sunglasses or goggles off, wipe clean with a towel
(provided by Pack), put sunglasses or goggles back on. - Change Tires (performed by pit crew only): first untie and then remove shoes, turn socks inside out, put socks
and shoes back on and retie shoes. DRIVERS MUST HAVE LACE-UP SHOES – NO VELCRO OR SLIP ON!
Socks must extend at least one inch above ankle. - Re-Fuel: Driver must drink 4 ounces of water thru a straw.
- Clean Windshield (performed by pit crew only): take sunglasses or goggles off, wipe clean with a towel
- If a tire (shoe) is lost during the race the driver must stop and put it back on before continuing.
THERE IS TO BE NO PUSHING OR SHOVING!!!
